Gum Disease

This is also know as periodontal disease. It is caused by plaque which is a thin colorless film (that can become discolored) that sticks to the tooth surface. In time, if not removed by proper home care including brushing and flossing, the gums become irritated and red, sore, and will bleed. In time, the supporting tooth structures of the teeth including the bone, can deteriorate.Infection, loose teeth and loss of teeth can result. This process can affect over 75% of Americans and is present at various degrees of severity from mild to severe. Bad breath or halitosis is not the only indication of gum disease and may not even indicate the presence of gum disease. A dental examination is important to detect gum disease.
